Football began its journey in Zemun at the beginning of the 20th century, while the city was still under the administration of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The first soccer balls were brought by high school students around 1904, playing in open spaces next to the Sava River. The football game quickly gained popularity among young people, and the first organized teams appeared under names such as "Tango" and "Zemunski Sport Club". In this period, high school professor Đorđe Gavrilović played a significant role, who in 1912 initiated the organization of the first official matches among high school students, thus laying the foundations for the further development of sports in the city.
Already at the end of the First World War, between 1918 and 1919, the Zemun Sports Club (ZEŠK) was founded. However, the club soon split into two parts. One part of the membership formed the Zemun Academic Sports Club (ZASK), while the other part founded the Zemun Civic Sports Club, which changed its name to Sparta in 1921. In 1930, these two teams merged and formed the Zemun Youth Sports Club, under which the club functioned until the beginning of World War II.
Particularly interesting was the gathering place of football enthusiasts of that time - the Central cinema. Apart from being a popular place for watching movies, its hall served as a space for meetings, agreements and planning of football matches and competitions, which further strengthened the community and football spirit in Zemun.

During the Second World War, when Zemun was part of the Independent State of Croatia, football activity did not stop despite the wartime circumstances. In that period, the most prominent football team was the Građanski club, which gathered the best players from Zemun. The club was a symbol of resilience and local identity in difficult times.
After the liberation of Zemun in 1944, football quickly revived as the most popular game in the city. In February 1945, the founding assembly of the new football club was held in the Central cinema hall. The club was founded under the name Fiskulturno društvo „"Maksim Divnic"“, in honor of the famous pre-war football player and national hero Maksim Divnić, who died in the National Liberation War.
In the same year, the club changed its name to FC Sremac, and in 1946 there was a merger with FC Sparta, which resulted in the formation FK Jedinstvo. Under this name, the club continued the competition for almost 23 years, until 1969. During this period, the club consolidated its place in local and regional football, gaining significant support from fans and becoming a symbol of the football tradition in Zemun.
Years 1969. the club changed its name and profile again, when it merged with the lower league FC Galenika, which brought new forces and resources. The club then adopted the name FK Galenika, which it carried until 1985. During this period, FK Galenika recorded numerous successes, including important placements in the lower Yugoslav leagues, which contributed to the further development of the club and its stability.
From 1985. In 2010, the club officially bears the name FK Zemun, under which it still exists today. This name represents a synthesis of the long-standing football tradition and identity of the city of Zemun.
At the beginning of the nineties, FK Zemun experienced a great rise. In the 1990/91 season, the club qualified for the First Federal League of Yugoslavia, and recorded its greatest success in the 1992/93 season, when it won 4th place, right behind Partizan, Crvena zvezda and Vojvodina. In the same season, the club reached the semi-finals of the Yugoslav Cup, thus confirming the status of one of the most serious clubs in the country at that time.
He made a notable appearance on the international scene in 1996, by participating in the Intertoto Cup, a competition under the auspices of UEFA. Although it did not pass the group stage, the participation itself represents a significant success for a club of this level and further strengthens its reputation.
FK Zemun remains a stable Super League until 2007, when it drops out of the top tier of the competition. The following year, the club faced additional challenges and was relegated to the Serbian League, the third level of competition in Serbia.
However, the 2007/08 season brings a surprise, even though it plays in a lower tier, FK Zemun reaches the final of the Lion Cup of Serbia, where it loses to Partizan with 0:3. Although defeated, the club gains the right to participate in the UEFA Cup qualifiers, but due to financial problems, it gives up that place to Borac from Čačak.
The club returns to the First League of Serbia in the following season (2008/09), and then slowly climbs up through the years. In the 2014/15 season, FK Zemun won the Serbian League and re-entered the First League, to crown the 2016/17 season with a return to the Super League, the highest ranking competition in the country.
FC Zemun manages to maintain the status of the Superleague for the next two seasons. In the 2017/18 season, it won a solid 9th place, while in 2018/19 it was relegated from the league and returned to the First League of Serbia.
Financial problems and poor results marked the following years. In the 2020s, the club fell into the lower ranks. However, thanks to the enthusiasm of former players and the support of the local community, Zemun remains active and committed to the development of younger categories.
Today, FK Zemun is playing in the First League of Serbia, the second tier of the competition, with the clear goal of stabilizing and eventually winning a return to the Super League. The club remains a symbol of Zemun's sports identity and the pride of its fans.
